Why Does Self-Tanner Smell? (and how to minimize it)

Short answer: Self-tanner smells because DHA reacts with amino acids in the outer layer of your skin through the same type of chemistry responsible for browning and aroma in cooked food. It's not fragrance, alcohol, or a "bad" ingredient causing it, it's the actual reaction that creates your tan. The good news: it's temporary, it's genuinely faint in a well-formulated product, and there's a lot you can do to keep it from being noticeable at all.

If you've ever wondered why self-tanner has that distinct smell, you're asking a more interesting question than most people realize. The short version people repeat online, "it's just the DHA," isn't wrong, but it's not the whole story either. After 12 or more rounds of formulating MAKAI and years of talking to customers about exactly this, here's what's actually happening and what genuinely helps.

Why Self-Tanner Actually Smells: The Real Chemistry

The smell is more complicated than simply saying "DHA smells." DHA itself has a characteristic odor, but that isn't really the whole story behind the classic self-tanner smell people recognize. Once DHA is on the skin, it reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin through Maillard-type chemistry, the same broad family of reactions responsible for the aromas and browning you get when food cooks. That reaction produces a whole range of compounds, and some of those are responsible for the recognizable "self-tanner" smell.

That's also why the smell tends to develop or become more noticeable after application, rather than smelling strongly the instant you open the bottle. The chemistry is happening on the skin, and factors like skin pH, hydration, and the particular amino acids available affect how the reaction progresses. Research has specifically shown that amino acids such as lysine, glycine, and histidine react with DHA at different rates, and that pH and hydration influence the reaction.

DHA concentration matters too. In general, putting more DHA into a formula gives you more tanning potential, but it also gives you more reactive material available for that chemistry. Older, high-DHA formulations are specifically associated in the scientific literature with stronger odor and less natural-looking color.

But this is where formulation really matters. It isn't accurate to say the smell is simply caused by DHA, and therefore every high-DHA product has to smell bad. The entire vehicle around the DHA matters, the ingredients, pH, stability system, fragrance strategy, how the product is delivered to the skin, and how much DHA is actually being used.

That's one of the things we learned during the 12-plus rounds of development on MAKAI. We weren't just trying to make something that could produce a dark tan. We were trying to find the point where we could get enough DHA to produce a noticeable, natural-looking result without unnecessarily loading the formula with DHA just to make it darker. At the same time, we were testing the entire formulation around it, because simply adding fragrance to a high-DHA formula doesn't change the underlying chemistry, it can just cover the odor temporarily.

That's an important distinction. Fragrance can mask an odor, it doesn't stop the DHA and skin reaction that's producing it. And alcohol isn't necessarily the culprit either. Alcohol can change how a formula feels, dries, and releases volatile compounds, but blaming the classic self-tanner odor specifically on alcohol or preservatives oversimplifies the chemistry. The strongest evidence points back to the DHA and skin reaction and the formulation conditions surrounding it.

What Actually Helps Minimize the Smell

The biggest thing is don't try to fight the smell by putting more products on top of your tan. Once you've applied self-tanner, the best thing you can do is actually leave the skin alone while the DHA is developing. The odor is tied to the reaction happening between DHA and amino acids in the outer layer of the skin, so layering another lotion, body oil, perfume, or scented product over it isn't going to stop that reaction. At best, you're masking the smell. At worst, you're interfering with how evenly the tan develops.

What we tell customers to do is pretty simple: let it develop with as little interference as possible.

  • Start with clean, dry skin
  • Let the tan dry fully before getting dressed
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing while it develops, not tight leggings, bras, or compression wear that creates friction
  • Avoid sweating, working out, or sleeping extremely warm during development
  • Apply at night if possible, so you can stay low-activity in loose pajamas while it works

Dermatology guidance specifically recommends loose clothing and avoiding sweat during the first several hours. Sweat and friction don't necessarily stop the DHA reaction, but they can increase transfer and make the whole experience messier.

As far as showering goes, don't rinse early just because you notice the smell. Your rinse timing should be based on the development time of the specific formula and the depth of color you're going for. DHA begins producing color within a few hours and the reaction continues beyond that, so rinsing too early can cut your development short. For MAKAI, you can rinse earlier for a lighter result, or wait closer to the full development window for something deeper. When you do rinse, use lukewarm water rather than hot, and don't aggressively scrub.

One thing worth clearing up: dark clothing isn't actually what reduces the smell. Dark, loose clothing mainly reduces the stress of seeing cosmetic bronzer or excess product transfer onto fabric. Breathability and minimizing friction are what actually matter for the development process itself.

One thing we'd specifically tell clients not to do is spray perfume over themselves to try to cover it up. You're combining fragrances with an existing scent rather than addressing the source, and if you're sensitive to fragrance, adding something heavily scented can make the sensory experience worse, not better.

The short version: apply, let it dry, wear loose breathable clothes, stay cool, avoid sweating, don't layer products over it, let the recommended development time run its course, rinse with lukewarm water, then moisturize.

Who's Actually Complaining About the Smell?

Here's something worth pointing out. More women use self-tanner than men, so it's typically not the person wearing it who has an issue with the smell, it's the partner who has to deal with it. The majority of the stories or concerns we hear go something like "my husband hates the smell" or "my boyfriend thinks it's whatever."

Two things about that. First, guys, have a little security about your partner doing something that makes her feel good. Second, we genuinely don't get these complaints about our own products, because as covered above, the prep and aftercare matter just as much as the formula itself. A fresh batch of MAKAI might have a touch more scent than one that's been sitting for a while, but both are still faint. At the end of the day, a banana has a smell too. So does any self-tanner.

The Biggest Myth About Self-Tanner Smell

Self-tanner does not always smell bad, and you don't need a heavily scented formula to cover it up. Before assuming smell is a dealbreaker, ask yourself three things: when does it actually smell bad, who's actually saying it smells bad, and if you already have a product you like, is it really a problem?

Most of the "self-tanner smells bad" reputation comes from older, higher-DHA formulas from years ago, not from where the category is today. And a lot of the complaints, per the section above, aren't even coming from the person wearing it. If you've found a formula you like, that actually works for your skin, and the people around you aren't complaining, chasing a "no smell" product that doesn't really exist isn't solving a real problem.

What 150 Customers Told Us About MAKAI's Smell

During our original pop-up launch events, we asked 150 women who had tanned before one direct question: compared to other tanners you've used, how does this one compare when it comes to smell? The results were about as clean as customer data gets.

  • 88 percent said MAKAI had a faint smell, and the other 12 percent said it smelled like less than what they'd used before. That's 100 percent of respondents landing on faint or better, with zero negative responses at all.
  • 62 percent said the smell was not noticeable after application, and 38 percent said slightly noticeable. Nobody selected a stronger option.
  • 46 percent described the scent while developing as pleasant, and 54 percent as neutral. Again, nobody described it as unpleasant.
  • 92 percent said the smell made them more likely, or much more likely, to use MAKAI again. The remaining 8 percent said it made no difference. Nobody said less likely.

The body mist specifically got its own compliment during that same round of feedback, several women compared it to a coconut body shimmer you'd pick up at Sephora or Ulta.

The Real Answer: Formulation Is What Actually Changes the Experience

Once a self-tanner is on someone's skin, there are only so many things the person applying it can actually control. Good aftercare can genuinely minimize how noticeable the smell is, but formulation is where the real opportunity to improve the experience actually lives.

You can't formulate a self-tanner by looking at DHA percentage in isolation. You have to look at the entire system, DHA level, stability, vehicle, pH, skin interaction, and sensory profile, because all of it affects what the customer actually experiences. That was the whole point behind the 12-plus rounds of testing MAKAI went through. We weren't interested in simply pushing DHA levels higher to chase a darker result at the cost of a worse smell. The goal was never "a DHA product with zero smell," because that's not a realistic way to describe the chemistry. FAQs

Does the self-tanner smell go away after I rinse?

Mostly, yes. Once the DHA and skin reaction has run its course and you've rinsed, most of the smell fades quickly. Any lingering scent afterward is typically much fainter than during development.

Do I need a scented self-tanner to cover the smell?

No. Fragrance only masks the odor temporarily, it doesn't change the underlying chemistry causing it. A well-formulated self-tanner shouldn't need a heavy scent to compensate.

Why does my self-tanner seem to smell stronger the first time I use it?
