How to layer your skincare routine with self tanner

by MAKAI

Short answer: Self tanner should always go on clean, bare skin, before your moisturizer, not after. Your other skincare steps (cleansing, exfoliating, hydrating) happen before you apply self tanner, and the rest of your routine picks back up once your color has fully developed.

If you have ever stood in front of the mirror wondering whether to moisturize first or tan first, you are not alone. We sat down with Lauren, a licensed esthetician who has been practicing since 2012 and co-owns The Skin Spa and Acne Clinic in St. George, Utah, to get a real answer on how self tanner should actually fit into a normal skincare routine. We also pulled in tips straight from Toni, MAKAI's co-founder and a certified spray tan artist with over a decade behind the spray gun.

Where Self Tanner Fits in Your Skincare Routine

The order matters more than most people realize. Self tanner needs direct contact with your skin to develop evenly. If there is a layer of moisturizer, sunscreen, or serum sitting between the product and your skin, you will end up with patchy, uneven color instead of a smooth glow.

  • Cleanse and exfoliate first
  • Apply self tanner to bare, dry skin
  • Let it fully develop before applying anything else
  • Resume your normal skincare routine once your color has set

What to Do Before You Self Tan

Prep is where most streaking and unevenness actually starts, not the application itself. Exfoliating beforehand removes dead skin cells so the color has a smooth, even surface to grip onto. Dry patches, like elbows, knees, and ankles, tend to grab more product and develop darker, so give those areas a little extra attention when you exfoliate. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, gentle exfoliation helps remove the buildup of dead skin cells that can make any topical product apply unevenly, which is exactly why this step matters so much before self tanner specifically.

Toni put it simply after years of applying tan for clients: if you put tan over dead skin, that dead skin is going to flake off and take your color with it, leaving your tan looking rough instead of smooth. Her process is shave and exfoliate first, give your skin a few hours to dry and let your pores close, then apply.

Skip heavy oils, lotions, or moisturizer right before you apply. Even a light layer can act as a barrier and cause the tanner to bead up or absorb unevenly. If your skin tends to be very dry, our guide on whether hyaluronic acid darkens skin covers how to keep your skin properly hydrated without interfering with your tan.

What to Avoid Right After Self Tanning

Once your self tanner is on, leave it alone. That means no water, no sweat, and no skincare products until your color has developed and you have showered it off. Adding anything on top, even something as simple as a hydrating mist, can dilute the color or cause it to develop unevenly in patches.

This is also not the time to introduce a new active ingredient into your routine. If you use retinol or another strong active, we go into exactly why that matters in Does Retinol Affect Your Self Tanner.

Should You Moisturize Before or After Self Tanner?

After, always. Once your tan has fully developed, moisturizing daily is actually one of the best things you can do to make your color last. Well hydrated skin sheds more evenly, which means your tan fades gradually instead of flaking off in patches. Just make sure whatever moisturizer you reach for is applied after your tan has set, not before or during.

Toni's own rule of thumb: rinse your tan off once it has had time to develop and settle into that first layer of skin, then wait until the next day to moisturize. That timing is what she has found works best after years of testing it on herself and her clients.

Morning and Night Skincare With a Fresh Self Tanner

Lauren walked us through the order she recommends to her own clients for a normal routine: cleanse, antioxidant or vitamin C, hydrator or moisturizer, then sunscreen last in the morning. At night: cleanse, a corrective serum if you are treating something specific, then retinol if that is part of your routine.

On a self tanning night, that order gets a slight pause. Cleanse and exfoliate as usual, apply your self tanner to bare skin, and skip the rest of your evening routine until your color has developed. Pick your full routine back up, including any actives, the next day once you have showered.

A Few Extra Tips for Best Results

  • Use a mitt instead of bare hands for more even application and to avoid staining your palms
  • Wear loose, dark clothing while your tan develops so nothing rubs or transfers
  • Check ingredient lists if you have reactive or acne prone skin. We break this down fully in Can Self Tanner Cause Breakouts or Acne
  • Keep sunscreen in your routine even with a self tanner on, since DHA based color offers no actual UV protection

Self Tanner Skincare FAQs

Self tanner before moisturizer or after?

Always after. Apply self tanner to bare skin first and moisturize once your color has fully developed.

When should I apply self tanner in my routine?

Apply it as the very last step after cleansing and exfoliating, before any other skincare product.

How do I layer skincare with self tanner?

Do your prep (cleanse, exfoliate) before, apply self tanner to bare skin, then resume the rest of your routine, including moisturizer and actives, the next day once your color has set.

What skincare should I avoid right before self tanning?

Skip heavy oils, lotions, and moisturizers immediately before application. They can create a barrier that leads to uneven color.

Can I use moisturizer before self tanner if my skin is very dry?

Stick to a light hydrator instead. A heavy moisturizer right before application can create a barrier and lead to patchy color, even on dry skin.

What skincare should I do after my self tanner develops?

Once your color has set and you have rinsed, moisturize daily. Hydrated skin sheds more evenly, which helps your tan fade gradually instead of in patches.

How soon can I do my normal skincare routine after self tanning?

Wait until your color has fully developed and you have showered, generally the next day, before going back to your full routine, including any actives like retinol.

The Bottom Line

Self tanner works best when it is treated as its own step, not squeezed in between your regular products. Prep well, apply to bare skin, let it develop, and pick your routine back up once you have showered.
